Jewellery Care

In order to keep your jewellery free from tarnish or irreparable damage DO NOT allow jewellery to come into contact with sprays, perfume, creams, soap etc. Wipe jewellery with a soft cloth after use to remove acids etc. that may have transferred from the skin. Water weakens elasticated jewellery and could cause colour-run or transfer in suede and leather items. Wire necklaces should either be hung up or curled into a circle when stored to avoid kinking the wire. When jewellery is not in use it should be stored in a box or wrapped in acid-free tissue paper to maintain its polished appearance.

We recommend you treat your jewellery with care and attention. We advise all jewellery is removed before going to bed, bathing/showering, swimming, doing housework, gardening etc. This is will prevent items becoming damaged. All jewellery should be checked regularly for loose stones or damage.

Regular cleaning of your jewellery will ensure it is kept looking its best.

Precious metal jewellery

All precious metal will tarnish naturally over time as the metal reacts with the oxygen in the air. This is not related to its quality. To slow down this natural process please store your jewellery in a box away from direct sunlight. A soft cloth can be used to remove the tarnished layer. Do not use tissue paper/paper towels to clean jewellery as they cause micro-scratches to the metal surface which in time will dull the appearance. Instead use jewellery polishing cloth and rub in one direction. Non-jewellery polishing cloths may be too harsh/abrasive and again cause damage.

Gemstones and semi-precious gemstones

Gemstones should be cleaned with a damp soft cloth after wearing to avoid them becoming dull. Some gemstones are delicate and hot water, harsh chemicals should be avoided. Even a diamond can be chip if hit hard enough or at the right angle! Gemstones should not be exposed to concentrated UV light as this could alter the colour and structure of the gemstones causing irreparable damage. We advise removing jewellery before UV exposure, i.e. nail lamps or sunbeds.

Pearls

These are made in layers and exposure to chemicals, cleaners etc. can cause the layers to ‘peel’. A very damp cloth (soaked in water) or dry very soft cloth should be used to wipe pearls. This is will maintain their natural lustre. Pearls should not be exposed to concentrated UV light as this could alter the colour and structure of the pearls causing irreparable damage. We advise removing jewellery before UV exposure, i.e. nail lamps or sunbeds.
